3.     Alfred Maurer’s Women & “Dawn”:  The theme and first 2 variations are reflections on Maurer’s changing style.  The theme is traditional and pathetic, Variation 1 is somewhat modern to go with Fauvism, Variation 2 has measures elongated into 7 beats to go with the very long face.  Variation 3 is in a lighthearted 5/8 to go with Niki de Saint Phalle’s sculpture, “Dawn.”  

This set of pieces was written in the spring of 2016, and first performed at the Weisman Art Museum on June 5, 2016.  The project was supported by an Individual Artist Grant through the Minnesota State Arts Board.
