Sarah Miller

Sarah Miller has been teaching composition and piano at MacPhail Center for Music since 1998.  She moved to Minneapolis shortly after finishing her Ph.D. in music composition at Michigan State University, and was added to the faculty of MacPhail Center for Music the very day she introduced herself to Janis Weller and Karen Zorn who were in charge of classes and individual instruction at the time.

Since moving to Minneapolis, Sarah has received many commissions, most recently from MacPhail to compose “Clouds” for clarinet, viola and piano. Other commissions include “Kinda Blue-Green” for the Stillwater Area High School Orchestra (through an American Composers Forum fellowship), and “Pentastic Dance” for the MacPhail Suzuki Orchestra.  She has also been the recipient of three Minnesota State Arts Board Individual Artist Grants. The most recent grant is currently in process and features pieces that are paired with art works at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Those pieces will be featured at the Mia website: artsmia.org.

Currently Sarah is working on a solo piano piece that will reflect her current exploration of musical texture.
